What makes Shakespeare “Shakespeare”? Can radical adaptations of the original early modern play still be considered Shakespearean? If King Lear concludes with a happy ending, then is it still King Lear? If The Tempest adds characters and changes tone, then is it still The Tempest? If Measure for Measure is combined with Much Ado About Nothing, then is the resulting play still written by Shakespeare? This talk will explore these questions and others, using recent critical theories and approaches in order to discuss the differences between “Shakespeare” and “Not-Shakespeare.”
